January 2026 marks a very special milestone for Fairfield as the School is celebrating 10 years since the opening of its Kindergarten – a wonderfully inclusive and supportive pre-school for children aged 3-5.
Whilst the rest of the Fairfield new build was still under construction, the Kindergarten opened its doors with the same warm and inviting atmosphere that it is characterised by today.
Kindergarten Manager at the time, Mrs Rita Willingham, remembers this moment clearly: “I helped open the Kindergarten 10 years ago when the main part of the School was still being worked on and it really was a huge team effort. From assembling furniture to adding the final touches, we pulled out all the stops to make sure it opened on time. The last ten years have flown by, and it’s been lovely to see so many children progress to the Foundation’s senior schools, taking with them the skills and foundations they gained during their time here in Kindergarten.”
Current Kindergarten children and staff documented the occasion by burying their very own time capsule! As well as being asked to draw a photo of themselves in 10 years’ time, the children were also asked to write down their ambitions for the future. From becoming a doctor to living in a princess castle to being able to tie their own shoelaces, the children’s answers showcase just how much the Kindergarten encourages them to develop confidence, individuality and a sense of ambition.
“It’s been wonderful to celebrate such a significant milestone in the Kindergarten’s history. Our time capsule marks this moment perfectly and we can’t wait to witness the reactions of our children to their answers in another 10 years’ time!”
Mrs Karen Kembery, Head of Kindergarten
Kindergarten alumni who now attend Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School respectively were invited to share their experience of being part of the first Kindergarten cohort.
Loughborough High School pupil, Layla, said: “The teachers were always very kind and caring – they understood us very well. I liked the fact that we didn’t feel like we were learning because it was very fun and interactive.”
Shiv, who is now in Year 9 at Loughborough Grammar School, said: “Many of the friends I met in Kindergarten are still my friends today. I would describe the Kindergarten as ‘one of a kind’.”
The Kindergarten’s birthday was also recognised with a special celebration afternoon. The children planted the time capsule, before enjoying cupcakes in the dining hall. Five members of staff who helped open the Kindergarten 10 years ago were invited to join the celebrations and were presented with an incredible piece of artwork created by the children.
The celebration not only highlighted the success of the Kindergarten since it first opened, but also the sense of community that continues to characterise it. From current children to Kindergarten alumni, parents, and staff, the Kindergarten is surrounded by 10 years of special memories.
