At Fairfield, we understand the importance of a great start which is why we focus on teaching children a broad, balanced sports programme which is tailored to each individual. We are extremely passionate about preparing children for a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity. This is coupled with creating a purposeful environment that allows every child to flourish and develop their confidence. We believe that children will not only be more confident movers when they leave, but also more conscientious and aware of their ability to have a positive impact on others.

EYFS
During the Early Years, physical education lessons are designed to create joy through movement. Through dynamic play, the children develop the ABCs of movement: Agility, Balance, Coordination and Strength. Using a range of equipment, dedicated teaching methods and passionate staff, the children also enjoy developing their throwing, catching, kicking and striking skills. This is vitally important to our department, ensuring that their first experiences of movement are positive, exciting and meaningful.

Lower Prep
In Years 1 and 2, the children continue to develop their fundamental movement skills through dynamic play. Modified games provide excellent opportunities for them to understand the importance of being a good team player and how this can support their learning in the classroom and on the playground. Kindness is emphasised throughout the lessons, and children are given plenty of time to practise their skills by working with a partner and in small groups.

Upper Prep
Children will build upon the work completed in the Pre-Prep by entering the world of the Fairfield Three Peaks of Physical Education and Sport. The three peaks of Mindset (HEAD), Fundamentals (HANDS) and Character (HEART) are central to the curriculum and link with the wonderful growth mindset development fostered across all subjects in the school. The three peaks create opportunities for children to connect and find meaning in their physical education lessons, inspiring them to become better people and to have a positive impact on the school community.
In Years 3 and 4, the children are introduced to the Fairfield Physical Education and Sport Values. Humility, Empathy, Adaptability and Togetherness (HEAT) are taught through modified games, dance and gymnastics, athletics and swimming. Through these units, the children not only continue to develop their fundamental skills, but also gain an understanding of what it takes to be a great team player, transferring this into the many sports teams offered during games.
In Years 5 and 6, the children continue to refine and develop their movement skills, applying them to more advanced activities. The focus of lessons shifts to six key concepts that aim to develop self-awareness and the ability to learn in any situation. Collaboration, Creativity, Conflict Resolution, Self/Peer Analysis, Resilience and Personal Best are taught through athletics, a variety of invasion games, modified net games, striking and fielding games, dance, gymnastics and swimming.
Popular Sports
Netball, football and swimming all have comprehensive programmes that cater to all skill levels from beginners to committed junior athletes. We provide coaching, training and match opportunities that allow natural talent to develop and establish a solid foundation for future growth. All our programmes encourage teamwork, skill development and personal growth. From Year 4 upwards, children have opportunities to participate in fixtures and festivals.

Triathlon
Fairfield Prep is the only school in the UK that offers Triathlon training for children from the age of 8 to 18. The Triathlon club aims to develop the skills used in the three disciplines of swimming, running and cycling, better preparing them for competing internationally.
Run by coach and competing athlete Chris Perham, the club enables pupils to train with elite British triathletes and coaches linked with British Triathlon Federation squad, who are based at Loughborough University.
The club members swim, cycle and run at locations around the campus throughout the year. The young athletes train to compete within the Tri series distances in their respective Schools ISA and IAPS school competitions and in the East Midlands BTF youth series in the summer term.
To date, Fairfield Prep and its sibling schools Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High have hosted their own Go Tri, with LGS alumni and GB triathlete Ben Dijkstra to present to award the competitors.
The future vision for the club is to provide a platform within the curriculum for interested athletes to develop their fitness and skills to lead into talented athletes training alongside the performance squad at Loughborough University. We are aiming to host local and national independent schools’ duathlon and triathlon competitions for children from the age of 8 – 18.
